Hitchzilla

Designed and manufactured by local inventor Geoff Davis, this clever gadget takes most of the hard work and wet feet! I’m never keen on getting the tootsies damp in winter time and I send Geoff a silent “thank you” whenever we’re at the ramp before or after a fishing session. He has certainly made a lot of improvement to the design of the product since it first appeared a few years ago and I can’t imagine launching or retrieving now without it. The patented Release and Retrieve Boat Latch is by far the cleverest device of its kind. Constructed from high-quality marine-grade stainless steel, it is designed to eliminate most of the problems associated with drive-drive off trailers. A lot of boaties these days prefer to power their craft on to and off their trailers – a manoeuver which takes a little practice to get right, but ultimately removes much of the effort involved in a manual launch or retrieve. The new device isn’t intended to replace the trailer winch mechanism or safety chain, but when operated according to the instructions, it makes the whole boat ramp exercise safer and quicker. It takes about 30 minutes to fit it to the bow of most trailer craft [aluminium or fibreglass] and then remains as a permanent fixture. It consists of two components – a latch assembly that is attached to the trailer winch post and a snare that’s fitted to the existing bow hook of the boat.

Trolling Motor Batteries Marine Battery Switches Explained Many people enjoy spending summers on their boat and a lot of boats come equipped with battery switches. However, not everyone completely understands what the purpose of these switches are. They do not see the value behind them, and even if your boat does not have one, you may want to consider installing one. These switches transfer batteries without reconnecting your wires each time you drain one battery.

From the water, simply drive your boat right up the trailer until the Drotto product clicks and secures your boat. Then simply pull the trailer out of the water, park the vehicle and hookup your chains.

Selecting a Multimeter The Major Players — Volts, Amps, Watts, and Ohms One of the primary players in this game, voltage, or volts, can be thought of as the pressure or force available in an electrical circuit. But another definition of voltage describes it as a difference of potential from one point in the circuit to another. The reason is simple: If there is no potential difference in the circuit, there can be no current flow.

The words that apply to this flow are ampere, amps, and amperage. Amperes express the volume or number of electrons that pass a given point in a circuit in one second. We can think of it as a route with a starting and finishing point at the same place, like a racecourse with the same starting and finishing line. In the case of electricity on a boat, think of that circuit leaving and returning to the source of power, which could be a battery or the shore-power pedestal on the dock.

Along the way, electrical gear on the boat will take power from the current flow in that circuit and use it to show us electronic charts, pump the bilge, and perform all sorts of other chores for us.

I’ve got a dual battery setup with a Perko Off, 1, 2, Both switch. In the Off position I have no power to my bilge pumps. I have been leaving the switch in the Off position to recharge the batteries while floating in my slip-no boat lift.

An automatic smart switch is a nice addition to any dual battery boat wiring – and a must have for trolling systems. Simply, the VSR connects between the two position battery posts through the battery switch.

The number of pumps is important from the stand point that bilge pumps are not reliable because they are electrical devices submerged in water. Contrary to common belief, the pumps themselves rarely fail; its the electrical system from which they operate that is usually the cause of the failure. Because of this, one way to improve reliability is with redundancy, or increasing the number of pumps to decrease the odds of complete loss of pumping ability.

The Drotto Catch-N-Release Auto Boat Latch is the answer! We at Drotto have been in the trailer business for years. We understand that today’s fisherman wants the ability to load and unload their boat as fast as possible without the hassle of getting wet.

I have three posts, two small posts and one large post on my starter solenoid… Typically, GM vehicles prior to have starter solenoids with three posts: Battery — This is the large post on the solenoid which is usually found on the center top of the solenoid. This is the post where the positive battery cable attaches along with any battery feed wires that the car might require.

These wires are usually heavy gauge red, or black wires and may contain a fusible link. This post becomes hot only while the starter is cranking. On an original points car, this post feeds a wire that sends full voltage to the coil during cranking. This wire is know as the resistance bypass wire, as it bypasses the resistance circuit that will typically feed the coil when the car is running. This is done to boost the coil output during engine start.

It is noteworthy that on some of our HEI conversion engine harnesses this wire is retained due to the design of the factory ignition switch and circuitry. While factory HEI vehicles do not have this bypass wire, on some of our HEI conversion harnesses, this wire is still required and may be found on your harness.

Here is a step-by-step guide to attaching a boat trailer to your car so you can reach your destination without stress. Chock the wheels Place a brick, block of wood or wheel chock behind each of the back tyres on the boat trailer to keep it from rolling backwards, or in front to stop it rolling forward. They can help guide the tow vehicle into the right position for attachment. Reverse your car Slowly back up the car until the towball is closely aligned with the boat trailer coupling. This may require more than one attempt, so patience is a virtue!

Lower the coupling on to the towball Open the latch on the trailer coupling, pull back the coupling handle and lower it on to the towball.

Over and over, people want to know: “How to wire a bilge pump with float switch?” Since we’re boat switch people, it’s most often the confusion arises from whether or not to use a 3-way switch to wire the bilge float switch through the switch at the helm.

Although inverters are not capable of running high-demand appliances such as air conditioning or heating like a generator can, they are great for low power uses such as computers, televisions, and small appliances. The ability to chill out in a quiet anchorage and still use your computer and perhaps a blender without the rumbling of a generator is a nice thing indeed.

They do this by converting the straight positive and negative DC power to volt alternating current. Once installed inverters are relatively maintenance-free and can provide years of reliable service. A good installation, however, is important to both good performance and onboard safety. As a marine surveyor I get the opportunity to look over many inverter installations.

Surprisingly very few are correctly installed even when the installation was done by professionals. At first thought an inverter installation would seem pretty straight-forward: Of course nothing is that easy on a boat and the more you get into the finer points of the installation, the more complicated things can be. For a simple single-supply inverter powering a single appliance or outlet, the installation can be pretty simple as long as a few basic safety considerations are followed.

The single biggest reason is safety.

Operator and passengers simply wear lightweight wireless sensors that cut the engine and sound alarm if anyone goes overboard. Provides Safety to Operator and up to 3 Passengers By simply wearing a light-weight sensor, everyone including your passengers, your children, your pets and you have an extra measure of safety while enjoying the day boating. Up to 4 sensors can be monitored by one device. Fully Portable No Installation or Wiring Mount the host receiver near the helm simply by peeling the adhesive strips.

Attach the personal sensor, turn the Autotether Screamer system on and you are ready to go. Unrestricted Movement Onboard The Autotether Marine operates without a physical cord tying the operator to the boat.

Installation Instructions A tachometer is a good addition to any vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. Installation of the Autogage Tachometer was fairly simple with only minor wiring including a wire to the distributor, a good ground, a 12 volt switched power source and a wire to power the tach’s light. The following write-up is an overview of the installation I followed and includes a few illustrations from the installation guide provided from Autogage.

To change the tach to operate on 4 or 6 cylinder engines, a pair of dip switches are located within the tach to make the adjustment. To get to the cylinder dip switches you have to remove rear cup by placing the tachometer face down on. A phillips screw retains the cup so remove that screw located on the back.

Gently lift the cup off to expose the circuit boards. Careful not to pull on the wires. Locate the dips switches on the circuit board. Move each of the two switches to the proper cylinder selection according to the diagram illustration on the right. Switch 2 up 8 Cyl.
